SOFT CORE GAY PORN AS FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT

An independent study shows that 2 out of 10 Americans consider themselves fans of soft core gay pornography. Most surprising is the fact that most of these fans do not identify themselves as gay and in fact a large number of the men who say they are fans of gay porn appear to be homophobic. Of the American gay porn fans 64.7% are men and most of those tend to be younger strait men.

It seems that gay pornography has become much more mainstream in recent decades reaching a height of popularity in the 1980’s. “When I was younger I have to admit I enjoyed gay porn, but I grew out of it.” said lead researcher Todd Bindle. “Since the 80’s gay porn has just been more acceptable, I mean who from my generation will forget Mr. T being a mainstream actor and a gay porn star at the same time?” It seems that many active and former gay pornography stars have real acting careers, however most can not make the transition from gay pornography to more mainstream movies. For every Dwaine Johnson, whose pornography name was “The Rock”, there are many more like Kevin Nash, whose pornography name is “Big Sexy”.

How mainstream is gay pornography becoming? “I think it has become very mainstream, I mean consider that a porn star actually became governor of Minnesota despite the fact that everyone knew he had once done gay porn under the name ‘The Body’.” Todd stated. Looking back it seems that Hollywood has a long history of using gay porn stars as we were able to find that in the cult classic “Plan 9 from Outer Space” actor Tor Johnson who played the police inspector turned zombie was in gay pornography under the name “The Super Swedish Angel”.

The study shows that the turning point for gay pornography as an accepted part of our mainstream culture occurred in the 1980’s. In the 80’s gay porn stars made regular appearances on family friendly sitcoms and music videos, and at one time there was even a children’s cartoon based on the gay porn characters featuring porn stars such as “Big John Studd” and “The Fabulous Moolah”.

The popularity of gay pornography today is such that they can fill arenas for live shows and offer shows on pay per view for sometimes more than $50.00. In short gay pornography is here to stay and though the great porn stars of past like Hulk Hogan and Rowdy Roddy Piper are long gone they are certain to remain icons of American culture. Perhaps because of pioneers like Tor Johnson gay porn will always have a place in American homes as good family entertainment.
